In this post I will discuss whether or not you should update Joomla 3 Quickstarts to Joomla 4.

In short, no you should not.

The Quickstarts use a variety of plugins that are quite honestly, getting a bit long in the tooth. I've tried updating some Quickstarts locally and to be honest the results were less than stellar.

I am currently working on building a new Quickstart based on Joomla 4 here : http://joomla4.jomres.net/

It's currently a work in progress, I'm building a ton of new functionality for it (see the technical blog for more details) but until that's ready I really do recommend that if you want Jomres in Joomla 4 that then you should start with a fresh install.

What's that you say? You're stubborn and a glutton for punishment?

If you really, really want to update your quickstart site then you should do it in this order.

  1. Update Jomres
  2. Update it's plugins in the Jomres Plugin Manager
  3. Update other plugins
  4. Update Joomla

Remember, any large update should always be tested on a staging/development server that's a copy of your live site before attempting update on your live server and you should always backup backup backup.
