What is Jomres Platform?
Jomres Platform is a new way for you to get access to Jomres plugins and support without needing to pay any up-front fees.
In the post-Covid 19 world, it's more important than ever for property managers to be able to list their properties online and take payments cost-effectively.
Traditionally, particularly smaller businesses, will have perhaps a web-page for their property but most of their business comes from the big OTAs (Online Travel Agencies) like Booking.com and AirBNB. The problem with these OTAs is that they charge extortionate commission rates. For example, unless you are a very large chain Booking.com will charge you 15% of your booking costs. AirBNB are slightly cheaper in that they push some of the costs onto the guest, nevertheless these costs all mount up. The other OTAs, such as Expedia etc will generally charge the same as Booking.com, so the bulk of the OTAs charge between 12% - 15% for bookings.
Jomres' goal has always been to usurp the power of the bully boy travel agencies by putting control back into your hands. It's intelligent, mature and has many of the features of the OTAs withouth the price tag. That's great, however right now, while property managers are strapped for every penny due to the collapse of the travel industry, adopting a new booking engine is a big risk for any property manager.
Jomres Platform takes away the risk
Jomres Platform is a new option that you can choose to use to get access to Jomres and it's plugins. Instead of paying an up-front fee, you agree to Connect your Stripe account (don't worry if you don't have one yet, an account is easy to get) to ours and that online booking payments go through our payment gateway. When you take a payment, then we take a small amount from the deposit payment (calculated based on the total value of the booking) and the rest goes into your Stripe account.
This converts us from simply a software supplier to a strategic partner and it's in our best interest that your online business be as successful as possible.
Why did we choose Stripe?
Stripe can take payments in 135 currencies, so you are unlikely to miss out on a guest being able to pay their deposit. They are available in 40 countries and if you aren't in one of those countries then you can easily create an American LLC using their Atlas service. If you're in one of the 40 countries then that's perfect because a Stripe account is free to setup.
Stripe & Jomres Platform, what will it cost?
These are Stripe's fees :
1.4% + €0.25 for European cards
2.9% + €0.25 for non-European cards
Their prices are very reasonable, meaning that if you're taking a payment through Jomres from an EU card, you're paying a much smaller amount of commission for bookings compared to the big OTAs.
Let's break that down :
Assuming a booking for a property is €200, and you're charging 20% as the deposit fee, then the deposit will be €40.
Stripe's fee, if the guest is paying with a European card, is 1.4% (of the deposit), so that's €0.56 + €0.25 making €0.81 in total.
The Jomres Platform fee is 2% (of total booking value), so add another 4€.
This makes the total cost of a €200 booking through Jomres Platform €4.81. Compare that to the likes of Booking.com who charge 15%, their fees would be €30! This makes Platform less than a third of the cost of using the OTAs to receive the bookings.
How is a Platform license different to other licenses for Jomres?
The major difference, as already mentioned, is that you can't use other payment gateways, just our gateway (called Jomres Connect). The knock-on effect of this means that you also cannot use the Jomres Core Stripe gateway which allows you to take your own application fee from property managers who might be listed on your site, or others such as Paypal. So you can't use the Jomres Subscription feature that allows you to charge property managers for listing their properties on your site.
If you intend to take all payments via your own account and then disperse payments to property managers through whatever mechanism you desire then this will not be a problem for you. If later on you decide that you want to use the subscription or commission functionality then you can change your license to an Essential or Essential Subscription.
The limitation for payment gateways is the only signficant difference between Jomres Platform licenses and other licenses. One further limitation, which can be resolved with the help of your web hosts, is that you must have ioncube decoders installed on your web server. The vast majority of hosts will be happy to do this for you, if they're not already installed.
Can I still use other OTAs like Booking.com, Expedia or AirBNB, as well as Jomres?
Yes, you can.
Jomres includes support for Channel Managers. Channel Managers are used to synchronise different channels availability and pricing. Our primary channel manager partners are Beds24 however we have a Rentals United plugin that is currently undergoing testing, and more are planned.
Bookings taken through the other OTAs are still charged at the OTA's rates.
The fastest, easiest way is to follow these steps :
- Make sure that you have a Stripe account.
- Use one of the Jomres Quickstarts to setup a complete new site with your choice of WordPress or Joomla.
- In the administrator area go to Jomres > Help > Get Connected. If the ioncube loaders aren't installed, you will see a warning at this point and be advised to contact your hosts. There are also links to documentation provided on this page which will give you all the guidance you need.
- Click the Connect Now button.
- In the popup window agree to connect to the Jomres Platform service.
- Once you have agreed and been returned to the Jomres administrator area then the Jomres Connect plugin and your license key are installed automatically for you.
There's nothing else that you need to do. If you want to make test bookings and payments (remember, property managers don't have the option to make payments so you need to be logged in as a guest) you can go into Admin > Jomres > Settings > Site Configuration and in the Debugging tab change the "Production or Development?" option to Development. Once you have finished any testing you want to do, change it back to Production and you'll be ready to take payments.
If Jomres is already installed on your Joomla or Wordpress site and you want access to plugins, then go to Step 3 above and follow the instructions.
I have already connected to you in the past and I want to create a second site with the same settings
If you are already connected to us, then on the new Jomres installation, in Admin > Jomres > Settings > Site Configuration you can configure your Stripe account number and secret keys. You can also use your license key from the old site on the new one.
